Ship and Yacht Building in Turkey
Ship building is a 600 years old tradition in Turkey. The first shipyard was established in 1390. By the 16th century Turkish shipyards were already largest in the world.
Traditional shipbuilding skills combined with modern techniques and education has enabled the Turkish shipbuilding industry to develop into an internationally known trademark since the early 1990’s
Turkish ship and yacht building industry has modern, technological developed and quality certified shipyards together with well experienced work force. In Turkey’s shipyards brand new ships, Yachts, mega Yachts, and sailing boats are being manufactured. In addition to these, repair and maintenance services are provided for vessels.
In 2006, 100 ships with a total of 556,285 DWT were delivered. 66 ships and yachts have been already contracted for 2007. The types and tonnage capacities of these Turkish and foreign flag ships varied: petrol tankers, chemical tankers, fishing boats, container ships, bulk carriers, Yachts, tug boats, tankers, sailing boats, general cargo ships, oil tankers, intervention crafts, coast guards, speed boats, multi and special purpose ships, military vessels, servicing tankers, bunker barges, tugboats, mega Yachts and other types of sailing and motor boats. Ships produced in Turkey are manufactured in accordance with international standards (ISO 9000 AND AQAP Quality Certificates) and under the supervision of certain societies. All these figures climbed-up in 2008.
In the beginning, mostly wooden ships and yachts were being manufactured. Later started the manufacturing of ships/yachts made of sheet iron. With its 600 years of history, shipbuilding today is in compliance with the international standards, thanks to efforts of the young entrepreneurs. The initial objective of the sector was merely to meet the needs of the Turkish Naval Commerce Fleet. However, having confirmed its technological competency outside Turkey, and especially to the European countries, today this sector has gained a considerable export potential.
The average employment figure of the sector is 5,000. With efforts to increase their share in the world market, the shipyards keep on increasing their production values.
Another attention drawing development regarding the Turkish shipyards is the increase in the number of mega-yachts manufactured. For the last three years, Turkey is at fourth place in the world list of mega-yacht (yachts longer than 25m.) manufacturers. The estimation that the demand for mega-yachts will increase and the fact that the Turkish naval architecture is competent enough for meeting this demand, indicate that this sub-sector will have to work very hard in the near future.
The present position of the sector
Today, Turkish shipyards are well-known in the world market for manufacturing ships/yachts according to international codes and for on-time delivery. However, due to the effects of the local and international economic crises of the last decade and the abandoning of the stimulus to spur the sector, the sector has become less and less competitive in the global sense. Against all odds, Turkish shipyards have survived this tough process. Moreover, they have achieved to keep up with the ever-developing technology. Today, these shipyards build ships/yachts especially for export purposes.
A rising star in Turkey: Naval Architecture Industry
Closely connected with the vehicle sector, the naval architecture industry has today become a crucial manufacturing sector for Turkey. Having started 600 years ago in the shipyards in Turkey, the sector is now globalizing each day. It necessitates the expertise and cooperation of various fields and has to be exercised in an atmosphere of intense international competition.
Naval architecture could be defined as a general name for the entire shipyard activities. It is clear that if its development is supported and encouraged, creating a considerable source of employment in all the countries, this sector provides serious economic benefits. The reasons why special importance should be attached to the naval architecture industry compared to the other heavy industries can be summarized as follows: naval architecture provides considerable foreign currency inflow, attracts foreign investors, creates a sub-industry comprised of its suppliers, enables technology transfer, carries a strategic meaning for its contributions to the defense of the country, and supports the naval commerce fleet.

Gulet: Enjoyment on Traditional Yachts & Boats
The singular design of Turkey's indigenous sea-going vessel, the gullet, blends practicality and tradition in a relaxed style that embodies the Blue Voyage. Over the years gullets have evolved from traditional fishing and cargo vessels into their present profile of a broad beam and wide deck. Constructed mainly in the shipyards of Bodrum, Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye and Istanbul, and along the Black Sea Coast, the boats are equipped with motors as well as fully functional rigging. The number of passengers a gullet carries depends on the boat's size, although most of them accommodate between eight and twelve people. There are small number of Gullets designed for 24 people as well. History of Gulet
